2026 Programme: Laughter Is Serious Work!

Laughter Is Serious Work:

The VIFFF Unveils Its Programme

From 21 to 25 October, VIFFF brings the best of international comedy to Vevey: 97 events, 48 feature films including 21 premieres, 23 short films and films from 26 countries!

Always laughing, yes. Never working, not quite… This year, our “Funny Business” focus explores the place of work in our lives, at a time when artificial intelligence is reshuffling the deck. From the assembly line to the call centre, comedy has never stopped observing the changes and absurdities of the working world to confront us with them. Nicolas & Bruno, whose fictional company, COGIP, runs throughout their filmography, will take this reflection further in a quirky masterclass in the form of a company meeting.

Making people laugh is a profession too, and our guest of honour, Gérard Jugnot, has been practising it brilliantly for more than fifty years. An iconic figure of French comedy, he will present five of his films, including his latest, Mauvaise pioche (2026), and give a masterclass dedicated to his career and his approach to comedy.

The International Competition, VIFFF Explore, the Midnighters, CHCHCH: Swiss Comedies, Mini vifff: Young Audiences, a selection of short films and a tribute to the late Rob Reiner round out the programme, offering a panorama that reflects the variety and richness of the genre. As for the venues, the Open Air moves from the Place du Marché to the Jardin du Rivage – seven screenings, still completely free! – and on Saturday, the festival takes over Vevey’s new Petit Reflet cinema.

But the VIFFF is also a lot of work! Behind every screening are months of preparation and a dedicated team, supported by our volunteers and partners. For all of this, a huge thank you.

And now, dear audience, it’s time to laugh. Sharing a laugh with a whole cinema is an experience no algorithm can replace. We can’t wait to see you in large numbers!

Co-directors of the VIFFF

Gérard Jugnot, Guest of Honour

Gérard Jugnot, Guest of Honour

The VIFFF – Vevey International Funny Film Festival is delighted to announce that Gérard Jugnot will be the guest of honour at its 12th edition!

He will be presenting his latest film, Mauvaise Pioche (2026), as well as some of his cult classics. He will also be giving a masterclass: a chance to look back on his illustrious career!

Actor, director and screenwriter, Gérard Jugnot made his name with the Splendid theatre troupe. There, he created a gallery of characters who are grumpy, clumsy, cowardly or overwhelmed by events, often embodying the “average Frenchman”. His appearance, voice and acting style have helped make him an instantly recognisable face of French comedy. Over the years, his comic style has also enabled him to develop roles in which the burlesque blends with a great sensitivity.

One of the defining features of his cinema lies in this expression, which he himself uses: “ordinary characters confronted with extraordinary events”. He describes this way of observing the world and its absurdities, somewhere between laughter, drama and melancholy, as ‘sneering sociology’. This vision is evident in his own films, from Une époque formidable (1991) to Monsieur Batignole (2002).

With his latest film, Mauvaise Pioche (2026), which will be screened at the festival in his presence, Jugnot returns to this theme: a man caught up in a situation that is beyond his control.

This visit also forms part of the VIFFF’s ongoing history. The festival has, in fact, already had the opportunity to screen some of Gérard Jugnot’s most memorable films during Patrice Leconte’s visit in 2019, including French Fried Vacation 2 (Les Bronzés font du ski, 1979) and Tandem (1987), followed by Jean-Marie Poiré in 2022, with Santa Claus Is a Stinker (Le Père Noël est une ordure, 1982) and Gramps Is in the Resistance (Papy fait de la résistance, 1983).

A genius of comedy, Gérard Jugnot has been entertaining generations of filmgoers for over fifty years. The VIFFF is delighted to welcome him to Vevey and to give the public the chance to talk to him about his career and his vision of comedy.

The programme and details of this event will be announced shortly.

Focus “Funny Business”: All Titles

Funny Business

For its 12th edition (21–25 October 2026), VIFFF turns its thematic spotlight on workplace comedies.

From the Industrial Revolution to the rise of artificial intelligence, and through the expansion of office culture, the world of work has undergone constant transformation — along with its promises of progress and its inevitable disappointments.

Work provides a rich source of comic tension, which filmmakers have long explored. Whether set in offices or factories, with corrupt bosses, questionable union leaders, or competitive colleagues, these titles offer a wide-ranging look at the theme: from critiques of capitalism and power structures to the absurdities and contradictions of everyday working life.

All the Titles in the Focus:

The duo Nicolas & Bruno will be in Vevey for a masterclass and a series of screenings, all linked to the theme!

Playtime will be screened at the Capitole on Sunday 18 October at 2.30 pm, in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse and Travelling (RTS).

Nicolas & Bruno Put the VIFFF to Work

Nicolas & Bruno Put the VIFFF to Work

As part of the ‘Funny Business’ programme, dedicated to comedy in the workplace, the VIFFF is delighted to be showcasing the duo Nicolas & Bruno, alias Nicolas Charlet and Bruno Lavaine.

For nearly thirty years, the corporate world, with its codes, language and absurdities, has provided a wonderful playground for the two partners. It was in Message à caractère informatif, which premiered on Canal+ in 1998, that Nicolas & Bruno created COGIP, a fictional company whose business remains a mystery to this day. Using authentic institutional archive footage, for which they rewrite the dialogue and provide the voice-overs, they have developed a world where meetings, hierarchy and jargon form the basis of a brand of humour that is both precise and offbeat.

In 2006, they continued this exploration with Le Bureau, the French adaptation of the British series The Office, before moving into cinema with Me Two (La Personne aux deux personnes)(starring Daniel Auteuil, Alain Chabat and Marina Foïs), followed by The Big Bad Wolf (Le Grand Méchant Loup) and In Search of the Ultra-Sex (À la recherche de l’Ultra-Sex). They also co-wrote the adaptation of 99 Francs and produced an ‘original French version’ of What We Do in the Shadows.

A recurring theme throughout their filmography, COGIP takes on a different guise depending on the story, notably taking the form of a provincial SME in Alter Ego, their fourth feature film starring Laurent Lafitte and Blanche Gardin.

From Message à caractère informatif to Alter Ego, Nicolas & Bruno continue to explore social conventions, identity, unease and human relationships.

Masterclass: ‘Welcome to COGIP’ Seminar

Conference agenda: welcome and registration of new recruits, distribution of badges, presentation of objectives and a PowerPoint presentation in the plenary session on cross-departmental synergy processes, followed by a ‘Review and Outlook’ workshop with the Chief Executive Officers: Nicolas & Bruno.

This seminar will feature audiovisual clips, projected still images and two-way Excel tables, which will enable an analysis of the careers of the aforementioned Chairmen and their approach to the production in question within the framework of COGIP and its subsidiaries.

The symposium will be hosted by journalist Philippe Congiusti (RTS), who will chair this exceptional conference whilst ensuring compliance with the ISO 9002 and SIPEXO E210 standards currently in force within the Schengen Area.

Note to Béné: Any lateness or unexcused absence will be punished by dismissal without compensation in front of everyone.

Active participation by delegates is strongly recommended.

Tribute to Rob Reiner

Tribute to Rob Reiner

Rob Reiner died tragically last December, leaving behind a body of work that ranks amongst the most delightful in American comedy. An unrivalled screenwriter and a master of pacing, few filmmakers have been able to make us laugh and move us across such a wide range of genres, always using humour to serve his characters.

It seemed only natural for the VIFFF to pay tribute to his genius, which has left a profound mark on our love of cinema. To celebrate his talent, we have selected three of his particularly iconic comedies.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984), largely improvised, follows a British rock band on a tour that is as chaotic as it is unforgettable. The film played a major role in popularising the mockumentary (fake documentary) and has since established itself as one of the great classics of comedy.

Equally hilarious, The Princess Bride (1987) blends fairy tale, parody and romance with rare elegance in a whirlwind adventure featuring love, revenge, duels and humour.

Finally, the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989) recounts, in 1980s New York, the ups and downs of Harry and Sally’s relationship. Driven by irresistible chemistry and dialogue that has achieved cult status, the film has since become an essential benchmark of the genre.

Three films which, in their own way, bear witness to the immense richness of Rob Reiner’s body of work. Whether you’ve already seen them ten times or are discovering them for the first time, let’s meet up in theaters to celebrate these films that have left their mark on the history of comedy and which, decades later, continue to make us laugh!

“These go to eleven.”
This Is Spinal Tap

“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
The Princess Bride

“I’ll have what she’s having.”
