Focus “Funny Business” : first titles

Funny Business

For its 12th edition (21–25 October 2026), VIFFF turns its thematic spotlight on workplace comedies.

From the Industrial Revolution to the rise of artificial intelligence, and through the expansion of office culture, the world of work has undergone constant transformation — along with its promises of progress and its inevitable disappointments.

Work provides a rich source of comic tension, which filmmakers have long explored. Whether set in offices or factories, with corrupt bosses, questionable union leaders, or competitive colleagues, the first titles announced offer a wide-ranging look at the theme: from critiques of capitalism and power structures to the absurdities and contradictions of everyday working life. Further films will be revealed in early October, when the complete programme is unveiled.

A first glimpse of this thematic focus will be offered with a screening of Playtime at the Capitole cinema on Sunday 18 October 2026 at 2:30 p.m., in partnership with the Swiss Cinematheque and RTS’s programme Travelling.

First titles:

The Man in the White Suit

Directed by Alexander Mackendrick, United Kingdom, 1951

A chemist whose career has stalled makes a groundbreaking discovery: a stain-resistant, indestructible fabric. But the textile industry and workers’ unions do not welcome this invention… A classic of British anti-establishment comedy.

Playtime

Directed by Jacques Tati, France / Italy, 1967

In collaboration with the Swiss Cinematheque and Travelling (RTS). Screenings of this film will take place at the Capitole in Lausanne.

Paris, 1967. In an ultra-modern city of glass and concrete, Monsieur Hulot and a group of tourists get lost in an absurd ballet of encounters and misunderstandings. Jacques Tati delivers a delightful visual satire of consumer society and the world of work.

Bread and Chocolate

(Pane e cioccolata)
Directed by Franco Brusati, Italy, 1974

Italian immigrant Nino moves to Switzerland, which he imagines as a land of abundance. Once there, however, he discovers that the job market is ruthless towards foreign workers. Offbeat, tender, and committed, this film is a pure example of the Italian comedy tradition.

Nine to Five

Directed by Colin Higgins, United States, 1980

Three colleagues each dream, in their own way, of getting rid of their unbearable boss. But what happens when fantasy comes dangerously close to reality? A wildly funny satire of sexism in the workplace, carried by the legendary trio of Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton.

Chicken and Duck Talk

Directed by Clifton Ko Chi-sum, Hong Kong, 1988

A struggling small restaurant sees an industrial fast-food chain open right across the street. A fierce battle soon begins, pitting two opposing visions of the restaurant business against each other. A wildly eccentric comedy packed with outrageous situations and hilarious misunderstandings.

Clerks

Directed by Kevin Smith, United States, 1994

Dante Hicks is a young convenience store employee who is called in to work on his day off. Between annoying customers, personal problems, and the absurdities of everyday life, his shift quickly becomes chaotic. Alongside his friend Randal, who works at the video store next door, Dante tries to get through another day at work. A cult classic and Kevin Smith’s first feature film, Clerks is a sharp and hilarious portrait of the frustrations of low-wage work.

Johnny Keep Walking!

Directed by Dong Runnian, China, 2023

Hu Jianlin, a modest employee, is mistakenly promoted to the position of senior executive. He then discovers the absurdities of bureaucratic workplace culture, while his superiors attempt to cover up their mistake. A highly entertaining satire of the Chinese working world.

ÉC’RIRE: A Comedy Screenwriting Residency – Apply Now!

Comedy screenwriting residency

VIFFF – the Vevey International Funny Film Festival – continues its comedy screenwriting residency dedicated to French-speaking feature films and launches a new project dedicated to short films!

With its expertise and network in comedy cinema, VIFFF thus confirms its desire to support and promote French-speaking creation in this still too often underrated genre.

Feature films

For the third consecutive year, VIFFF is offering a week-long residency to comedy screenwriters. A unique opportunity to move forward on a feature film project in an inspiring setting, with guidance from a professional screenwriter specializing in comedy.

Who is it for?
For authors currently writing a screenplay for a French-speaking comedy feature film, who already have a first dialogue draft. Two projects will be selected.

Where?
In Vevey (Switzerland), in an apartment overlooking Lake Geneva, in the heart of the old town.

When?
From October 18 to 25, 2026, during the 12th edition of VIFFF.

How to apply?
By sending a complete application file by June 15, 2026.

Short films

After two editions devoted to feature film screenplays, VIFFF is opening a new residency dedicated to short films! Applications are open to both projects already developed and screenplays still at draft stage. A great opportunity to advance a comedy short film project with the support of a professional screenwriter.

Who is it for?
For authors working on a screenplay for a French-speaking comedy short film. Four projects will be selected, including at least two by Swiss nationals or Switzerland-based authors.

Where?
In Vevey (Switzerland). Accommodation is not covered for the short film residency.

When?
From October 18 to 25, 2026, during the 12th edition of VIFFF. The residency will alternate three collective days supervised by the resident screenwriter with independent writing time, with support as needed.

How to apply?
By sending a complete application file by July 31, 2026.

Awards 2025

VIFFF d'Or

The Jury, composed of Noé Maggetti, Meli Boss, and Fisnik Maxville, awarded the VIFFF d’Or for Best Feature Film (CHF 2,000) to Vitrival by Noëlle Bastin & Baptiste Bogaert.

The Jury’s statement:

“We chose to reward a film that surprises with its ability to expand the horizons of comedy. A film that invites us to laugh through a singular rhythm, the constant creation and subversion of expectations, and a story that transcends genres with flair and subtlety.
A film in which everyone plays themselves, staged with tenderness in an everyday life where even dogs are acknowledged in their full presence. A film that questions what the police are for — and, above all, what they are not for.
A film that appears simple and stripped-down, yet demonstrates cinema’s greatest strength: to capture, record, and encapsulate a moment, a situation, a challenge. By placing at its center a group of characters facing many demons and obstacles, the work weaves together an anthropology of a place.
To modestly replenish the vacation funds of its residents, we are delighted to award the VIFFF d’Or to Vitrival by Noëlle Bastin & Baptiste Bogaert.”

Youth Jury Prize

The five members of the Youth Jury – Anubhuti Lal, Margaux Clerget, Abdi Hagi Mumin, Julia Ojeda, and Myriam Mühlebach – awarded Lesbian Space Princess by Emma Hough Hobbs & Leela Varghese.

The Youth Jury’s statement:

“By creating an original universe where systems of oppression are reversed, the film follows a protagonist on her journey toward self-acceptance. This coming-of-age story, which amplifies humor through caricature, repetition, and careful staging, won us over with its bold, uninhibited approach.
The unique animation format and the diversity of its representations stood out strongly among the competition. That is why we decided to award the Youth Jury Prize to Lesbian Space Princess.”

The prize of CHF 500 was offered by the Brentano Foundation.

Audience Award

The film Baise-en-ville by Martin Jauvat convinced audiences, who awarded it the Audience Award (CHF 500).

Martin Jauvat — director, co-writer, and actor of Baise-en-ville, who had already visited Vevey three years ago with his debut feature Grand Paris — once again met the Vevey audience and received his award at the closing ceremony.

Audience Award for Best International Short Film

In the short film section, the Audience Award went to Allez ma fille ! by Chloé Jouannet, a tender and humorous comedy exploring the relationship between an awkward father and his daughter, who is undeniably growing up faster than him.

This prize of CHF 500 was offered by Clap.ch.

Audience 2025

The 2025 edition of the VIFFF brought together 9,500 spectators. The festival continues to grow after last year’s milestone anniversary edition, which attracted 9,100 film lovers (8,000 in 2023, 6,000 in 2022, and 5,000 in 2021). More than 1,000 children also took part in school screenings and workshops.

The organizers are delighted by the continued strong support from audiences and by the festival’s growing presence in the region’s cinematic landscape. The 10th anniversary in 2024 had strengthened VIFFF’s cultural offer with an additional day of programming, more screenings, and the launch of a writing residency and special programs. The 2025 edition followed the same format, and its highly satisfactory results bode well for the future.

The only downside was the unpredictable weather, which unfortunately forced the cancellation of seven of the eight free open-air screenings on the marketplace. Nonetheless, VIFFF will once again offer screenings under the stars (and blankets) next year.

Sophie Letourneur: VIFFF of Honor

This year’s guest of honor, Sophie Letourneur, presented seven of her films and gave an inspiring masterclass reflecting on her work and creative process. Her presence delighted both longtime admirers of her unique filmography and many curious new viewers.

This honorary award from VIFFF reflects the festival’s core mission: to celebrate the richness of comedic cinema and highlight the actors and filmmakers who bring it to audiences everywhere. At the closing ceremony, Sophie Letourneur received the VIFFF of Honor, designed by Swiss artist Nathalie Borgeaud — a prize saluting her entire career and her contribution to contemporary comedy.

The 11th edition of VIFFF bares it all!

90 screenings, talks and performances, 46 feature films, 18 short films and 22 countries represented: from October 22 to 26, the very best of international comedy comes to the Riviera!

This year, VIFFF tackles the theme Sex & Comedy: how do desire, taboos, and gender relations fuel laughter in cinema? A common thread running through many films in this edition, it resonates particularly with our guest of honor, Sophie Letourneur, whose works and masterclass reveal a comedy of the real—intimate, free, and delightfully offbeat.

VIFFF remains true to its unifying mission: after a successful debut in 2024, the Autumn Open Air returns to Place du Marché with free screenings under the stars. Mini VIFFF invites children to discover comedy through screenings and workshops, while Swiss and international shorts pack all the energy and inventiveness of the genre into just a few minutes. The Nocturnes promise wild and transgressive experiences, VIFFF Explore opens up to forms at the edges of the genre, while CHCHCH shines a light on the unique creativity of Swiss cinema. In International Competition, an eclectic selection proves that comedy can take on any subject.

Thus, VIFFF reaffirms its conviction that humor offers a unique way of looking at our world. In a time marked by censorship and violence, laughing together is anything but trivial. Comedy can be a way to resist, to reassert our shared humanity, and to forge connections where others would seek to break them. We hope that all peoples—in Palestine, Sudan, Ukraine, and elsewhere—may one day have the material and human conditions that make this sharing possible. Let us appreciate the privilege of living such moments.

Mini VIFFF: Film Workshops for Children & Teens

Dubbing Workshop - ages 12 and up

What if you could dub the lines from a cult comedy, a video game show, or your favorite manga? That’s exactly what this workshop offers: through the fun of improvised dubbing!

The idea: participants watch clips from unknown films or series on the big screen, then take on the challenge of re-dubbing them live to create entirely new scenes. The day begins with an introduction to the basics of theatrical improvisation, which are then applied to the art of dubbing.

This playful, one-of-a-kind workshop is open to anyone aged 12 and up, and is perfect for those who love inventing surprising dialogue, experimenting with their voice, and above all, sharing moments of laughter and creativity!

Animation Workshop – ages 6 and up

Children invent stories together through a collective game inspired by the cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse). Drawing on these stories, they then create short films out of cut paper on the theme of animals. A fun and creative experience to discover the magic of animation!

Sophie Letourneur: Guest of Honor

Sophie Letourneur: Comedy Meets Reality

The VIFFF – Vevey International Funny Film Festival is delighted to welcome Sophie Letourneur as the Guest of Honor of its 11th edition!

Director, screenwriter, and actress, Sophie Letourneur has established herself since her beginnings as a singular voice in contemporary French comedy. She has a unique talent for capturing the trivial and awkward moments of everyday life and transforming them into humor that is both burlesque, tender, and offbeat. Her films, fueled by improvisation and self-mockery, turn the ordinary into moments of joyful comedy, revealing both its absurdity and its poetry. Additionally, her explorations of relationships and desire, centered on female characters far from stereotypes, also resonate naturally with this year’s festival focus: “Sex & Comedy.”

By placing laughter at the heart of her work, Sophie Letourneur has invented a unique, free-spirited, and daring way of filming reality.

On Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October, a selection of her films will be screened as part of the VIFFF. She will also give a masterclass, offering an opportunity to look back on her career and her distinctive approach to comedic cinema.

Born in 1978, Sophie Letourneur graduated from the École nationale supérieure des Arts décoratifs. After several acclaimed short and medium-length films, she directed her first feature, La Vie au ranch, in 2010. This was followed by Les Coquillettes (2012, shot during the Locarno Festival), Gaby Baby Doll (2014), and Énorme (2020, starring Marina Foïs and Jonathan Cohen). She then began an autofictional “Italian trilogy” with Voyages en Italie (2023) and L’Aventura (2025), in which she stars alongside Philippe Katerine.
