Tribute to Rob Reiner
Rob Reiner died tragically last December, leaving behind a body of work that ranks amongst the most delightful in American comedy. An unrivalled screenwriter and a master of pacing, few filmmakers have been able to make us laugh and move us across such a wide range of genres, always using humour to serve his characters.
It seemed only natural for the VIFFF to pay tribute to his genius, which has left a profound mark on our love of cinema. To celebrate his talent, we have selected three of his particularly iconic comedies.
This Is Spinal Tap (1984), largely improvised, follows a British rock band on a tour that is as chaotic as it is unforgettable. The film played a major role in popularising the mockumentary (fake documentary) and has since established itself as one of the great classics of comedy.
Equally hilarious, The Princess Bride (1987) blends fairy tale, parody and romance with rare elegance in a whirlwind adventure featuring love, revenge, duels and humour.
Finally, the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989) recounts, in 1980s New York, the ups and downs of Harry and Sally’s relationship. Driven by irresistible chemistry and dialogue that has achieved cult status, the film has since become an essential benchmark of the genre.
Three films which, in their own way, bear witness to the immense richness of Rob Reiner’s body of work.
